Hooking Up A 3 Way Switch To A Light

End-of-Run Lights Controlled by Two Three-Way Switches These end-of-run lights are controlled by two three-way switches with a two-wire cable power source coming through the first three-way switch.

The white or neutral wire goes completely through the connection system with pigtail connections at both switches and the first light box. Only two-wire cable with ground is needed for the boxes at the lights. Power Through Light End-wired lights are controlled with two three-way switches with power routed through the light boxes to two-wire cable to the two switches. Look at how power is connected at lights: White wire taped with black electrician's tape from the nearest switch to a traveller wire that connects the second or end light, then pigtailed to the brass fixture terminal. All wire is utilized this way without waste. You have your two black wires left plus one red wire.

To do this, form a loop with your pliers, hook that loop up to the screw of the common terminal, and then use the screwdriver to tighten the screw. Then, form your new loops for your new switch. At this point, you will see two ground wires, two white wires, two black wires, and one red wire. Again, tie the two ground wires and two white wires together with wire nuts.

Connect the black wire coming from the switch onto the common terminal. Again, form a loop with your needle nose pliers. Hook the loop onto the common terminal screw, and then tighten the screw in place. This will connect the power to your light. Afterwards, connect the remaining black and red wires to the two traveler terminal screws. Turn the switch in the circuit panel back on and then see if you can turn on your lights from both switches. Go back to the top and check your wiring again. If your light can be controlled using both light switches—congratulations!

You have now successfully installed a 3-way switch. Cover up Now, if your light is working, which means your circuit is closed, screw in the light switches into your boxes and put on the cover.
